Statement on Clinton's Speech About Justice Reform

This morning, Hillary Clinton talked passionately about the issue of mass incarceration and the dire need to reform our failing criminal justice system. We are heartened by her speech and appreciate her reference to our country’s current “incarceration generation,” the pipeline of “nonviolent drug offenders and those with mental health issues” who are unfairly cycled through the justice system.

Two years ago, the Justice Policy Institute published a book of the same name, Incarceration Generation, which brings together commentary from 21 researchers, advocates and people who have personally experienced the justice system that shows how we can reduce the use of incarceration and have safer communities. We encourage all presidential candidates and policymakers to be mindful of the reforms needed to fix this broken system, and we encourage them to seek real solutions to end the “age of mass incarceration”.
